Listen to the Heartbreaking New Julien Baker Song

By Wes Muilenburg

Memphis, Tennessee guitarist and songwriter Julien Baker has announced her sophomore album Turn Out the Lights, and has released a new song in anticipation. That song, "Appointments," is an emotionally devastating ballad, which is almost par for the course for Baker. It finds it identity in the same vein as her previous album, 2015's Sprained Ankle. "Appointments" is grounded by a gentle guitar riff and deliberate piano chords, drawing the focus to Baker's incredible voice. The refrain - "Maybe it's gonna turn out alright/And I know that it's not but I have to believe that it is" - echoes a sentiment that many of us can find relatable in these times of stress, anxiety, and lost love.

Listen to "Appointments" below.

Turn Out The Lights is out Oct. 27 via Matador Records.
