Minnesota Legend Grant Hart Dead At 56

Minnesota native Grant Hart lost his battle with cancer Wednesday night. Hart was an important figure not only in the Minnesota scene but in music scenes across the country.

Grant Hart rose to fame in the 1980s where he played drums in the hardcore punk turned alt rock band Hüsker Dü. The band formed in 1979 when singer and guitarist Bob Mould wandered into Cheapo Records by Macalester college.

Mould heard punk music being blasted from a PA at the door and wandered in. Mould said that he ended up hanging out with Hart because he was the only person in the store. The two struck up a friendship and decided to form a band.

With Mould on guitar and Hart on drums, they enlisted the help of bassist Greg Norton to form Hüsker Dü.

The band bitterly spilt up in 1988; however, with the announcement of a boxset featureing the bands early material, hopes were high that the band would be getting back together.

After the bands split in '88, Hart was the first person to release solo music. He released an EP title 2541 in 1988 and a full length album titled Intolerance the following year.

Hart's output of music was steady in the years following Hüsker Dü's breakup. He went onto form the trio Nova Mob and released two full length albums.

Hart's final album The Argument was released in 2013. The album is based off of John Milton's Paradise Lost, and inspired by his friendship with beat writer William S. Boroughs.

Bandmate Bob Mould took to Facebook Thursday morning to eulogize the passing of his bandmate. He did not gloss over their past as some tend to do with the death of someone.

Mould posted, "For better or worse, that’s how it was, and occasionally that’s what it is when two people care deeply about everything they built together."
