Calvin Heights At Driftwood Char Bar

Minneapolis indie rockers Calvin Heights played an intense set at Driftwood Char Bar Thursday night. The band is playing shows around the Twin Cities in support of their album Worst Calligraphy which was released in August of this year.

The noisy atmosphere created on Worst Calligraphy translates to an even better experience in person. The music comes to life when played in front of people. Their set began with frontman Brett Carey sitting on the floor with a bag over his head. He sat rocking back and forth as his guitar fed back into his amplifier. The rest of the band followed suit until they kicked into their first song "3/7". The bag soon came off when the band continued into the next songs.

Taking inspiration from The Pixies, Calvin Heights uses dynamics heavily in their set. The band would be creating as much noise as they could with Brett and fellow guitarist Sam wailing away on their guitars with drummer Jordan Wipf bashing away and then the band would be nearly silent. The band played off each other well. There were no awkward moments where someone was lost. Even when Brett came up with a riff mid set and quickly taught it to the other members, the song came together and sounded like something that'd be on their record.

The only downside from the night was that one of the bands interludes felt like it went on a little to long. It happened toward the end of the set when everyone was tuning up one last time.

During Calvin Heights set at Driftwood, they debuted two new songs. In an interview with Local Juke Joint, Jordan and Brett mentioned that they were working on new material. The new songs are titled "Cold As Your Flower" and "Slow". Both songs were great. "Slow" is a straight ahead rocker. The guitars, drums, and bass chugged along with an almost punk energy.

Both the staff and crowd enjoyed the set Calvin Heights played and they asked for one more song. After a little hesitation, Brett played "Say My Name Now" from 2015s Tall Tales Of A Confident Man solo
