New Music Friday 2/2/18

Only a couple of releases today. Hey, that means we can spend more time talking about how bad the new Justin Timberlake album is! Awesome!

AWOLNATION - Here Come the Runts (Red Bull Records)

The "Sail" dude is still at it! This is the third AWOLNATION album, and the third one that hasn't really mattered much. It probably bops at least a little bit, I guess.

Efrim Manuel Menuck - Pissing Stars (Constellation)

The guitarist responsible for some of the most iconic post-rock ever made has returned for a new solo album. After focusing on Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Silver Mt. Zion for a while, Menuck is finally releasing his second album under his own name, and his first in seven years. Only one track passes the nine-minute mark, which is a little disappointing. That won't stop this album from containing some of the most conceptual and inventive guitar playing of the year.

Rich Brian - Amen (88rising)

Viral star Brian Immanuel is finally dropping his debut project after his single "Dat $tick" blew him into the stratosphere almost exactly two years ago. He recently retired his old moniker, "Rich Chigga," in favor of his real name. The project includes the previously released "Glow Like Dat" (but not the 21 Savage-featuring "Crisis" for some reason) and has features from Joji and Offset.

Field Music - Open Here (Memphis Industries)

The Brewis brothers are keeping up their consistent release schedule with their seventh album. It includes the singles "Time in Joy" and "Share a Pillow." Their last album was 2016's Commontime.

Rhye - Blood (Loma Vista)

The formerly mysterious R&B project has at long last followed up their Polaris Prize-nominated debut Woman. After announcing the departure of producer Robin Hannibal, Mike Milosh returned with the "Please/Summer Days" single in June 2017. Blood is the group's first album in five years.

Steve Reich - Pulse/Quartet (Nonesuch)

The legendary minimalist composer is releasing two previously performed works. Quartet was performed in 2013, and Pulse performed in 2015. The original ensembles that performed the pieces replayed them for the record. Described by the composer as one of his more complex works, Pulse/Quartet is his 24th album for Nonesuch.

Justin Timberlake - Man of the Woods (RCA)

Justin Timberlake's Bon Iver album is finally here. And it sucks! If you couldn't guess that from the atrocious "Filthy," the horrendous and funny-in-a-bad-way "Supplies," and the bland "Say Something," there is something wrong with your ears. The 66-minute monstrosity is Timberlake's fourth album and first since 2013.
