New Music Friday 4/6/18

Holy buckets, that's a bunch of albums! Too many, dare I say.

Hop Along - Bark Your Head Off, Dog (Saddle Creek)

Third record from the inimitable Philadelphia indie rock quartet. Self-produced by the band's guitarist Joe Reinhart, Bark Your Head Off, Dog is the somewhat long-awaited follow-up to 2015's excellent Painted Shut. The new record includes "How Simple" (one of my favorite songs of the year thus far) and "Not Abel."

Cardi B - Invasion of Privacy (Atlantic)

It's here. Cardi B's debut full-length album. Following the massive success of last year's "Bodak Yellow" (included on the album, obviously), Cardi armed herself with a lion's share of the most popular producers and rappers for her defining statement. The album features 21 Savage, Migos, Chance the Rapper, YG, SZA, and more.

Various Artists - I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats: All Hail West Texas (Merge)

Following the release of the podcast of the same name, the full covers album is finally available together. The compilation includes various artists' takes on 2/3rds of the songs from the Mountain Goat's classic All Hail West Texas. Laura Jane Grace, Ibibio Sound Machine, Craig Finn, Dessa, Amanda Palmer, Andrew Bird, and more contribute.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Sex & Food (Jagjaguwar)

Fourth effort from Ruban Nielson's psychedelic outfit. Nielson said that the record is "the most eclectic and expansive UMO release yet." It was recorded all over the world, from Seoul to Reykjavik to Nielson's home of Auckland. The band's previous album was Multi Love (2015).

Thirty Seconds to Mars - AMERICA (Interscope)

Jared Leto's arena-rock band is back with their fifth(!) album. This album is sure to be super deep and insightful into American culture and politics. That was sarcasm, it's gonna be a bad time. At least they released like two good songs ten years ago. AMERICA features A$AP Rocky and Halsey.

Dr. Octagon - Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation (Bulk)

Kool Keith and Dan the Automator reunite for the first time in 22 years. Woo! Even though there has technically been a spiritual sequel and a literal sequel since the 1996 original, Moosebumps brings the classic duo back together for the true continuation of the Dr. Octagon spirit. Features contributes from DJ Q-Bert

Kali Uchis - Isolation (Interscope/Virgin EMI)

The Grammy-nominated Virginia singer continues her recent hot streak with her debut LP. The record is stacked with features, including Steve Lacy, Jorja Smith, Bootsy Collins, and Tyler, the Creator. There are also contributions from Kevin Parker, Thundercat, Dave Sitek, Damon Albarn, and BADBADNOTGOOD. Isolation follows her 2015 EP, Por Vida.

Hinds - I Don't Run (Mom+Pop)

Sophomore release from the Spanish lo-fi quartet. It includes some of the group's best garage-pop yet. Includes singles "New For You," "The Club," and "Finally Floating." Last year, they dropped cover of Kevin Ayer's "Caribbean Moon" as a single; in 2016, Leave Me Alone, their debut, was released.

Underoath - Erase Me (Fearless)

Eighth LP from the metalcore classicists. The record describes their struggles with the band member's faith and relationship to Christianity after openly professing their faith since they formed in 1997. It also marks the return of drummer/vocalist Aaron Gillespie after a ten year departure. Erase Me is also Underoath's first record in eight years.

Eels - The Deconstruction (E Works)

Following a four-year hiatus, Mark Everett returns with Eels' 12th record. The album "focuses on compassion and kindness," and may be inspired by the birth of Everett's son. It follows their 2014 album, The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett, and a 2015 live album.

Wye Oak - The Louder I Call, the Faster It Runs (Merge)

Fifth full-length album from Baltimore indie rock mainstays. The duo's last album was 2016's Tween, consisting of material recorded between 2011 and 2014; Jenn Wasner released a solo album as Flock of Dimes in 2016; Andy Stack performed as the touring drummer of EL VY (Matt Berninger/Brent Knopf). Singles include the title track and "Lifer."

The Cavemen - Nuke Earth (Slovenly)

Third dosage of pure garage punk from the New Zealand weirdos. Recently, the group reissued their self-titled debut. The band describes it as being like "what you lust after every night when you're licking your sexiest leather record jackets." That is definitely an image.
