New Music Friday 5/11/18

We're back baby! I'm still depressed, but now I have free time! That's an improvement, I guess.

Beach House - 7 (Sub Pop)

Aptly-titled seventh record from the dream pop masters. The new album features percussion from tour drummer James Barone and "production" from Peter Kember, aka Spacemen 3's Sonic Boom. This is the band's first album without producer Chris Coady in a decade. Last year, Beach House released their B-Sides and Rarities compilation; their last studio albums came as 2015's one-two punch of Depression Cherry and Thank Your Lucky Stars. 7 includes "Lemon Glow," "Dive," and "Dark Spring."

Mark Kozelek - Mark Kozelek (Caldo Verde)

Seems like the Koz is taking it slow this year. After dropping four albums last year (one Sun Kil Moon double LP, a collaboration with Jesu, a collaboration with Parquet Courts' Sean Yeaton, and a collaboration with pianist Ben Boye and drummer Jim White), the only album on Marky-Mark's docket is this new self-titled record. It was notably recorded in two separate hotels, in addition to San Francisco's Hyde Street Studio. Kozelek played every instrument on the record, with the exception of drumming from former Sonic Youth Steve Shelley on "Sublime." He has released three songs from the album in advance - "This Is My Town," "My Love For You Is Undying," and "The Mark Kozelek Museum." Next year at some time, Kozelek will release an album with saxophonist Donny McCaslin and Jim White.

Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (Domino)

The Sheffield boys are back with their sixth album. Written by frontman Alex Turner on piano, the album began as a solo album and features a noticeable lack of guitars. The science fiction-inspired album includes no singles. Stereogum's Tom Breihan compared it to Arcade Fire's Everything Now. Uh oh.

Worlds Greatest Dad - get well soon (Deep Rest)

Exciting debut from the Atlanta, GA emotive indie band. The album was produced by emo veteran John Nacleiro  at Nada Recording Studio; he is best known for producing Brand New's Your Favorite Weapon and recording/mixing My Chemical Romance's debut album. Singles include "Laughing (While You're Smiling)" and "Cough."

Illuminati Hotties - Kiss Yr Frenemies (Tiny Engines)

LA-based engineer and songwriter Sarah Tudzin presents her debut as Illuminati Hotties. Previously, Tudzin has contributed to albums by artists ranging from Macklemore and Logic to Slowdive and Porches. Based on the singles released thus, she is set to establish herself as something dynamic and worth watching in the indie rock scene.
