Surprise new Weeknd album (EP? who knows), a pair of excellent hip-hop collaborations, and more in this week's new albums! Happy Good Friday!
The Weeknd - My Dear Melancholy, (XO/Republic)
Toronto's (other) favorite is back with a surprise new album/EP/mini-album. Six new songs over 21 minutes, featuring contributions from frequent collaborator Frank Dukes, Mike WiLL Made-It, Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Skrillex, and a lyrics/composition credit from Nicolas Jaar of all people. French techno artist Gesaffelstein, best know for producing two tracks on Kanye West's Yeezus, is the only formal feature on My Dear Melancholy,. The new project follows the Weeknd's contributions to the Black Panther album and his 2016 smash Starboy.

Amen Dunes - Freedom (Sacred Bones)
Fifth album from Damon McMahon's psych-folk outfit. Partially inspired by McMahon's mother's cancer diagnosis, Freedom was created over the course of three years. It features collaborations with guitarist Delicate Steve and Nick Zinner (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs). The group's last album was 2014's Love.

MF Doom & Czarface - Czarface Meets Metal Face! (Silver Age)
The collaboration we never thought we needed. Czarface (consisting of DJ 7L & MC Esoteric and Wu-Tang's Inspectah Deck) come together with Metalface himself for a full project together. The album features Philly rapper and underground legend Vinnie Paz and the inimitable Open Mike Eagle. Doom and Czarface previously worked together on the latter's 2015 song "Ka-Bang."

Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour (UMG)

Jean Grae & Quelle Chris - Everything's Fine (Mello Music Group)
Musical couples have made great albums; get ready to add this one to the list. Recently engaged, Jean Grae and Quelle Chris have produced a wonderful underground rap record with a tinge of comedy. A portion of the comedy comes from the many comedic guests, including Hannibal Buress, John Hodgman, Michael Che, and Nick Offerman. Anna Wise, Your Old Droog, and Denmark Vessey also feature.

The Voidz - Virtue (RCA)
This album is practically the opposite of the other Strokes album that came out this month. Albert Hammond, Jr.'s Francis Trouble doubled-down on catchy garage rock, while the new album from Julian Casablancas' Voidz is a post-modern electronic freakout. Of the six singles dropped in advance, highlights include the pronounceable "QYURRYUS" and the capitalist meltdown "AlieNNatioN." The group's last album was 2014's Tyranny, as Julian Casablancas + The Voidz.
