New Music Friday 5/25/18

Another week, another crop of albums! The only thing that is constant is the crushing passage of time!

CHVRCHES - Love Is Dead (Glassnote)

The third album from Glasgow electro-pop trio is sure to be their most divisive. Enlisting outside producers (Greg Kurstin, Steve Mac) for the first time, the band described the new material as "the most pop stuff we've done." The quartet of singles released in advance prove this statement and show the more explicitly aggressive and political side of their sound, especially in Lauren Mayberry's lyrics. 2015's Every Open Eye was the group's latest release. Love Is Dead features Matt Berninger of The National.

Pusha-T - DAYTONA (G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam)

The legendary coke rap MC and G.O.O.D. Music president is finally releasing his third studio album. Formerly titled King Push, it is the first of the five albums announced by Kanye West on Twitter to actually see the light of day. It is (supposedly) was produced entirely by West, and features Rick Ross and West. King Push - Darkest Before the Dawn: The Prelude came out in 2015 and acts as a prelude to the new album (probably?). Tomorrow brings a great snowfall, hail King Push.

Snow Patrol - Wildness (Republic)

The dudes that did "Chasing Cars" are back with their seventh album and first in seven years! It's co-produced by Jackknife Lee (U2, Weezer, Crystal Castles). The song "Life On Earth" includes a sample/interpolation (I can't tell which but Wikipedia says something's there) of legendary krautrock group Can and some swearing. In 2013, the band felt entitled enough to come out with a greatest hits album that wasn't just "Chasing Cars" 13 times.

Clairo - diary 001 EP (FADER)

The internet pop sensation makes her first definitive statement following last year's viral success. The six song project includes only two new songs (one featuring PC Music's Danny L. Harle and the other featuring Irish rapper Rejjie Snow) and a demo. Singles (I guess they're technically singles, even though only one was released as being attached to the EP) include "Pretty Girl," "Flaming Hot Cheetos," and "4EVER."

Jenny Hval - The Long Sleep EP (Sacred Bones)

The gothic Norwegian songstress keeps fans busy with another EP. This time, it's a jazz-inspired and musically adventurous collection of four songs that "recycle the same compositional motives, but manipulate them into very different shapes." Last year, Hval and collaborator Håvard Volden released their Feeling EP as Lost Girls. She will also release her first novel, Paradise Rot, in the fall.

Dear Nora - Skulls Example (Orindal)

Katy Davidon's indie pop band makes its triumphant return after a 12 year hiatus. The new album was written between 2009 and 2017, and was inspired lyrically by Davidson's recent visits to Mexico and "how our weird techno-futuristic present juxtaposes so absurdly with the never-ending backdrop of inexorable, ancient elements." Includes "Sunset on Humanity."

Shawn Mendes - Shawn Mendes (Island)

It's the new Charlie Puth album! Wait, no. It's the new Shawn Mendes album! I just found out that they are different people. One likes R&B and the other likes guitars, got it. Mr. Mendes is mature now, likes flowers, and hired John Legend's old graphic designer (probably). The album features Khalid and Julia Michaels. It's self-titled, so you know it means business.

MIKE - Black Soap (Lex)

New York rap upstart MIKE follows up 2016's breakout MAY GOD BLESS YOUR HUSTLE. The new project "symbolizes a fight for understanding and truth." Last year, he dropped the BY THE WATER EP, and in February he released the 13-minute visual EP(?) resistance man. "Time Ain't Enough" was released as a single.

A$AP Rocky - Testing (RCA)

Third album from the New York swag-rap pioneer. Following a weird and somewhat jumbled release cycle (loosie singles? performance art? MOBY?), the new record features T.I., Kid Cudi, FKA twigs, Skepta, Juicy J, French Montana, and Frank Ocean (twice!). Includes a new version of the single, "A$AP Forever."

clipping. - Face EP (Deathbomb Arc)

Hugo-nominated avant-rap trio clipping. are reissuing their 2012 debut EP. Features remixes from Youth Code, JPEGMAFIA, Signor Benedick the Moor, and Flanch; the group also remixed "drum'n'shout" band Foot Village's 2013 song "This Song is a Drug Deal."
