New Music Friday 6/1/18

The main focus of today is gonna be the new Kanye album. But don't forget the others!

Father John Misty - God's Favorite Customer (Sub Pop)

Cynical Bearded Folk Man doesn't believe in taking time off! After releasing one of last year's best and certainly one of its most conceptual albums, Josh Tillman returns to the character that made him famous. On God's Favorite Customer, however, the lines between Misty and Tillman get blurred in a major way. Inspired by a six week stay in a hotel, the album finds Tillman looking inward in a way not seen since 2015's I Love You, Honeybear. Includes "Mr. Tillman," "Just Dumb Enough to Try," and "Please Don't Die."

Natalie Prass - The Future and the Past (ATO)

The Virginia singer-songwriter follows up her critically acclaimed self-titled debut with a new record of off-the-wall indie pop. After scrapping a previous version of the album in 2016, Prass collaborated with Matthew E. White and the Spacebomb House Band. Includes "Short Court Style" and "Lost."

Oneohtrix Point Never - Age Of (Warp)

Daniel Lopatin is making sure we have a (musically) weird 2018. His ninth album as Oneohtrix Point Never was inspired by the idea of an inverted 2001: A Space Odyssey. It features contributions from ANOHNI and Prurient, and was mixed by and includes additional production James Blake. There's a song about Pixar, too. Last year, Lopatin scored the thriller Good Time; his last solo album came out in 2015.

Neko Case - Hell-On (Anti-)

Indie rock luminary releases her seventh solo album. When she isn't busy working as a member of The New Pornographers or releasing collaborative albums with k.d. lang and Laura Veirs, Neko Case records her own excellent form of country-inflected rock. Hell-On is her first album in five years. It will feature the title track and "Bad Luck."

Mazzy Star - Still EP (Rhymes of an Hour)

Second major post-reunion release from the legendary dream pop outfit. After reuniting in 2010, releasing a comeback album in 2013 (Seasons of Your Day), and dropping some solo material (an album and EP from The Warm Inventions, vocalist Hope Sandoval's partnership with My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm Ó Ciosig), it seems like the group is here to stay. The new EP will include "Quiet, The Winter Harbor."

Ghost - Prequelle (Loma Vista/Concord)

After confusing this writer with what was only a live album (Ceremony and Devotion) last December, Ghost's proper fourth album is here. The Swedish heavy metal Scooby-Doo cover band take on the light-hearted themes of "death and doom" on the new one. Songs will cover topics such as the Black Death, dancing to disco until you die, and the medieval. In 2016, the band won a Grammy for "Circe," the lead single off of their 2015 album, Meliora.

Ben Howard - Noonday Dream (Island)

Third album from the English singer-songwriter. Ending the four year gap that followed his last album, I Forget Where We Were, the new record explores textures and sounds inspired by the surrounding landscapes. Some of the album was written in France. Includes the singles "Towing the Line" and "Nica Libres At Dusk."

Kanye West - ye (G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam)

Scoopity poop indeed. After Kanye and G.O.O.D. Music delivered a likely clasic last week with Pusha T's DAYTONA, expectations are even higher for the eighth album from the inimitable Mr. West. Will it be more bars about poop? Will it be a concept album about Donald Trump? Will it make America great again? Prepare for a lot of confusion and excitement.
