New Music Friday 6/22/18

Summer just began, and Ear Coffee is here to make sure you start it off with the best new tunes!

Kamasi Washington - Heaven and Earth (Young Turks)

Your hipster friend's favorite jazz musician also happens to be actually one of the best. Washington's ambitious double-LP follow up to last year's Harmony of Difference EP focuses on duality; specifically, the duality of the world we see inwardly versus what we see outwardly. If that's too conceptual for you, there are tracks that are also inspired by the Street Fighter games and Bruce Lee films. Set aside 150 minutes and just listen to it. Singles include expansive tunes such as "The Space Travelers Lullaby."

The Orb - No Sounds Are Out of Bounds (Cooking Vinyl)

This is almost certainly the most blissfully relaxed album being released today. Legendary electronica duo The Orb serve up another dose of chilled-out house with their fifteenth album. It features contributions from an Eno (not Brian - Roger) and Public Image Ltd.'s Jah Wobble, among others. The group's last album was 2016's COW/Chill Out, World!.

Teyana Taylor - KTSE (Def Jam/G.O.O.D. Music)

The final Kanye-produced Wyoming album is here with only a murmur. Standing for "Keep That Same Energy," the Harlem R&B singer's second album features Kanye and Ty Dolla $ign (apparently). This thing still hasn't hit streaming services or any digital platforms, but we'll keep you updated when it does.

Best Coast - Best Kids (Amazon Music)

This is adorable, hands down. Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno wanted to make something "with an edge while staying in a kid-friendly lane." The album is also specifically designed to give parents something that isn't the Frozen soundtrack to listen to with their kids. Ear Coffee is an anti-Frozen venture, so buy this album for the greater good. It features original songs, such as "Cats & Dogs," and covers of classic kid-level bangers like "When You Wish Upon A Star" and "Rainbow Connection." Best Coast released their third album, California Nights, in 2015.

MIKE - renaissance man (Lex Records)

MIKE stays busy. renaissance man is his third release of 2018 and second of the last 30 days(!). It was recorded in New York and London, and was executive produced by Darryl Johnson. There is a song titled "INVESTIGATE 311 INVESTIGATE 311 INVESTIGATE 311."

Freddie Gibbs - Freddie (ESGN/EMPIRE)

With only a brief teaser given on Thursday, this self-titled project came as a pleasant surprise for rap fans everywhere. It has only been a year since Gibbs' last album, 2017's You Only Live 2wice. 03 Greedo features on the track "Death Row."

Another concept album about technology! This is Dawes' sixth album. Last year, the group released We're All Gonna Live, a live album companion to their previous studio effort, We're All Gonna Die. The new record features indie pop band Lucius.

So Stressed - Pale Lemon (Ghost Ramp)

Get your dose of weirdo indie rock with the new album from Sacramento duo So Stressed. In 2017, they released their sophomore record, Please Let Me Know. Singles for Pale Lemon include "Cream & Gold" and "Very Long Cloth."

Nine Inch Nails - Bad Witch (self-released)

The final installment in Trent Reznor and co.'s trilogy of EPs is here at last. However, Bad Witch is being billed as an album despite being no different in length or concept than previous entires, mostly to ensure better promotion on streaming services. Good ol' Trent! The band's last full-length, Hesitation Marks, came out in 2013.

Panic! at the Disco - Pray for the Wicked (Fueled By Ramen)

Call your emo friends from 2004! There's a new Panic! album out! Of course it isn't actually emo anymore! It's Broadway pop that's edgy! Nothing wrong with that, though! Brendon Urie follows 2016's smash Death of a Bachelor with more of the same(?)! The album includes the one-two punch single of "Silver Living"/"Say Amen." Pray for the Wicked is the band's sixth album.
