New Music Friday 7/20/18

Pour one out for the recently deceased Week In Reverse. The only thing I will miss about writing it is the ability to complain and use a slightly different picture of a cat with headphones.

Wild Pink - Yolk in the Fur (Tiny Engines)

Brooklyn dream pop/indie rock outfit Wild Pink avoid the sophomore slump completely with their follow-up to 2017's self-titled effort. Described as an album about "protecting something vulnerable," Yolk in the Fur exemplifies the gorgeous chaos shown in the cover photo of the Kuwait oil fires. The record was produced by the band and Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Parquet Courts, Pixes). In addition to their debut, the band released a live Audiotree album. Singles include "Lake Erie" and "Love Is Better."

The Internet - Hive Mind (Columbia)

Hive Mind is the fourth album from the Grammy-nominated funk and neo-soul band. Since releasing 2015's breakout Ego Death, the group has focused on their respective solo ventures - Syd's Fin, Steve Lacy's Demo EP, Matt Martians' The Drum Chord Theory, and Christopher Smith's Loud (as part of C&T). Singles for Hive Mind include "Roll (Burbank Funk)" and "La Di Da."

Meg Myers - Take Me To The Disco (300 Entertainment)

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Meg Myers is done trying to escape. Her second album, Take Me To The Disco, faces the demons of her past, whether it's her childhood as a Jehovah's Witness or bad relationships. With a sonic palette inspired by artists like Enya, Fiona Apple, and Nine Inch Nails, Myers continues to make beautifully aggressive pop. Singles include "Numb," "Jealous Sea," and the title track.

Ty Segall/White Fence - Joy (Drag City)

Garage rock king Ty Segall and Tim Presley AKA White Fence return with a sequel to 2012's collaborative album Hair. This is the second of album of 2018 for both Segall and Presley. The former released Freedom's Goblin in January with his band, the Freedom Band; the latter worked with Cate Le Bon for a sophomore album as DRINKS (Hippo Lite). Singles for Joy include "Body Behavior" and "Good Boy."

Ovlov - Tru (Exploding in Sound)

The Connecticut-based band are back with their sophomore album and first in five years. The group has broken up twice since releasing Am in 2013, but managed to bring it back together (fortunately). In the interim, guitarist/vocalist Steve Hartlett released an album as Stove (2015's Is Stupider), which featured some members of Ovlov. Tru features "Spright," "Short Morgan," and "Stick."

Spelt Melk Collective - Title Redacted (self-released)

Technically this album came out yesterday, but I don't write a New Music Thursday column. So here we are. This is the debut album from the Minneapolis jazz fusion quartet. Make sure to check this album out and support some good ol' local music. These guys never stop playing shows either - go out and see them sometime soon.

88rising - Head in the Clouds (88rising)

88rising is the future. The mass media company/label has taken over the internet with a string of viral singles and videos. Head in the Clouds, the first collective release for the label is set to soundtrack the rest of the summer. The label's roster features Joji, Rich Brian, Higher Brothers, Keith Ape, Niki, and more. Guests on the album range from 03 Greedo, Playboi Carti, and BlocBoy JB to Yung Bans and Goldlink. Plus there's a (random) Famous Dex remix with Keith Ape and Korean rapper Verbal.
