Laska - "in the blossom of this" | EP Review

The combination of vocal harmonies, gentle acoustic melodies, programmed drums, and lo-fi production does not feel like it should work when you put it on paper, yet Laska's new EP in the blossom of this seems to have expertly blended all of these elements together into a genre-defying release. The band's 2017 debut album Ceiling Zero gave insight into Laska's genre-bending tendencies, but it is on this EP that the band fully embraced their broader sound palette.

Sisters Hanna, Bex, and Mookie Morton spend in the blossom of this reflecting on themselves and their relation to the world. From the opening track "Paralysis," you are instantly captivated. Shimmering guitars and skittering drum loops mixed with organic drums create an expansive landscape for the sister's vocals to float through and give form to. The Morton sisters take time to explore the feelings of disconnect, longing, and depression along with their many facets.

With the help of producer Evan Middlesworth, Laska uses soundscapes to accent and punctuate lyrical moments in order to make their impact that much greater. On "Coffee Naps," lo-fi percussion and blown-out audio create a haze that grows as the sisters reflect on a toxic relationship. The noise overtakes the song from time to time. It acts like a cacophony of emptiness as the band declares that their depression has become too loud. The following track, "To Hold You" serves as a counterpoint to its noisier counterparts. Silence and space surround mournful vocal melodies to create a sense of loneliness and subsequent longing for that person whose presence makes everything feel better.

Laska's dynamic range, both emotionally and sonically, create this experience that makes it extremely difficult to not connect with. From top to bottom, in the blossom of this is a raw and intimate experience that creates an instant connection with the listener. This is a release that I definitely recommend you sit down with a cup of coffee and just listen to from beginning to end.

in the blossom of this is out now. You can find it where ever you get your music.
