Following the release of their 2019 debut record Chew Toy, the grunge-pop quartet Sass showed they were anything but easily tossed aside. The record had the band's quick wit and petulant punk attitude on full display while handling some heavy topics. Stephanie Murck, Joey Hays, Alex McCormick, and Willem Vander Ark are now back with their first new single of 2020, "11:11."
Making a wish at 11:11 am/pm has always been used as a moment to speak a desire into existence. It's rare to think about the thing we desire most not being what we expected. From the get-go, Murck questions whether she made the right decision, circling back on the phrase, "I swear that I'd be fine alone." It feels like a tug-o-war as the band goes back and forth between the verse and chorus before Murck relents say, "But now I know how it feels, and I don't want to let it go." Underpinning "11:11" is a wall of fuzzy guitars that grow from a single shimmery riff. The roar only increases by chaotic drumming which takes everything to the brink and leaves it teetering on its heels. It's clear that a year (and a pandemic) later, Sass has not lost the sharpness of their bite.
About the song, Stephanie Murck said, “11:11 is basically a happy love song, which is a-typical for us! It’s about when you finally feel happy being single, and then true love strikes and changes all your grand plans to be happily alone forever. It’s the first song off our new record ‘Heart to Heart’ which we recorded at pachyderm in January.”
"11:11" will be available everywhere tomorrow, April 15, but you can listen to it early below.
