Before the pandemic, a majority of bands could rely on shows as their primary (if not only) means of self-promo. Maybe they had some Bandcamp demos to send to the people running different house venues. Maybe not. As long as they could rip a gig every week or so, it didn't necessarily matter if they had an EP or album out.
Despite their lack of recorded material, Sockhop Massacre held a sterling reputation as a go-to injection of noise for any bill, whether it was a prime weekend spot at Rowhouse (RIP) or a Tuesday at the Kitty Cat Klub. Almost a year-and-a-half later (and just in time for shows to start coming back), the Minneapolis quartet is making their triumphant re-entry with their new song "The Revolutionary."
If we temporarily disregard their May 2020 single "Enhanced Interrogation Technique," then "The Revolutionary" is their first officially released single. The group is working with Ear Coffee favorites Kitchen Knife Blood Pact to finally put out their debut album. Yet Sockhop Massacre works in mysterious ways. To build up hype for their first LP, they're putting out a song that doesn't even appear on the record.
In a statement to Ear Coffee, the band said: "['The Revolutionary'] was the first song we wrote and performed together two years ago. Since then, Max, Kai, and Liam have generally written songs on their own, so this song is kinda unique in being a collaborative effort between band members. We recorded a version of the song for our demo [that] sounds like sticking an electric toothbrush in your ear. This time around, our friend Carter Fenzl handled production. Because it felt distinct from the album, which is more personal in its lyrical themes, we decided to release it as a non-album single."
While we can confirm that the album is worth the wait, "The Revolutionary" is sure to satiate any burnt-out garage-punk cravings you might have in the meantime. As the song teeters back and forth on confidently drunken legs, the band makes sure to keep things spicy with bursts of noise, skittering hi-hats, and twisted melodic sensibilities. Sockhop Massacre immediately proves themselves capable of recreating unhinged fury on record, just as they've proven themselves capable of kicking ass at a show.
Listen to "The Revolutionary" below, exclusively on Ear Coffee. Sockhop Massacre's debut LP The Exciting Sockhop Massacre will be out June 18th, 2021 via Kitchen Knife Blood Pact.
