New Music Friday 6/15/18

It came out yesterday, but make sure to check out the new Syvers single!

Jay Rock - REDEMPTION (Top Dawg/Interscope)

California rapper and member of TDE drops his third commercial project. After releasing "King's Dead" with Kendrick Lamar, Future, and (technically) James Blake as part of the Black Panther soundtrack (possible banger of the year), Rock has followed up with several more hard-hitting tracks, such as "Win," "The Bloodiest," and "OSOM" featuring J. Cole and SiR. REDEMPTION will also feature SZA, Jeremih, Ty Dolla $ign, and Jay-Z. His last album was 2015's 90059.

Chromeo - Head Over Heels (Big Beat/Atlantic)

The kings of horndog electro-funk are back to give the summer a healthy dose of slap bass. The four year drought was ended last year with the release of lead single "Juice," and it has only gotten funkier from there. The new record will have a wide range of guests, from French Montana, Amber Mark, and DRAM to R&B legend Raphael Saadiq and former Prince-collaborator/guitarist Jesse Johnson.

Petal - Magic Gone (Run For Cover)

Kiley Lotz is here to make you feel things. If that wasn't apparent before, Magic Gone sets a new precedent for emotional and heartfelt songwriting. Petal builds a connection with the listener with its punky guitars and direct lyricism. Last year, Lotz released the Comfort EP (the title track appears on Magic Gone) and her debut album, Shame, in 2015. The new record includes "Better Than You" and "Stardust."

Nas - NASIR (G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam)

Yeezy Season continues. Praise be unto 'Ye. The fourth album in G.O.O.D. Music's run comes from one Nasir Jones, legendary MC and all-time great, and is produced entirely by Kanye West. It will be Nas' first album in eight years, since his critical comeback with Life Is Good. Nas revealed the album cover and title in advance of tonight's live listening party.

It'll be on streaming services at some point, hopefully. The links will be added at that time. Patience, young one.

R+R=NOW - Collagically Speaking (Blue Note)

The jazz supergroup we never knew we needed. Spearheaded by pianist Robert Glasper, the group also includes Terrace Martin on synths, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah on trumpet, Derrick Hodge on bass, and more. The group's name stands for "Reflect + Respond = NOW," and aims to reflect the current age with its music. Collagically Speaking features contributions from Moonchild's Amber Navran, Goapele, Terry Crews(!), and Yasiin Bey. Singles include "Change of Tone" and "Resting Warrior."

Johnny Marr - Call the Comet (Voodoo)

Now that Morrissey's gone off the deep end, we can all find solace in the calm of Johnny Marr. The former Smiths guitarist returns with his third solo album and first since 2014. It's not surprising that it took him this long, given how busy he's been contributing to other records (including Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds among other) and writing his autobiography. Previously released tracks include "The Tracers" and "Hi Hello."

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Hope Downs (Sub Pop)

It seems extremely likely that Australia's Rolling Blackouts C.F. are going to be able to turn two EPs' worth of hype into a great debut album. Triple-guitarist/triple-vocalist never worked so well. The band has consistently released singles throughout the year, such as "Mainland," "Talking Straight," and "An Air Conditioned Man." Their last release was 2017's The French Press.

Melody's Echo Chamber - Bon Voyage (Fat Possum)

Five years is a long time to wait after an exceptional debut album, but fans of French psychedelic dream pop outfit Melody's Echo Chamber have been patient. After getting used to having Tame Impala's Kevin Parker behind the boards, the new record is entirely produced by Melody Prochet herself. 2013's self-titled effort was followed by Bon Voyage's lead single only one year later. That track, "Shirim," will end alongside other tracks, such as "Breathe In, Breathe Out."

Protomartyr - Consolation EP (Domino)

Fans of soul-crushing Detroit post punk have barely had a change to breathe since Protomartyr's last album, Relatives In Descent, which came out last fall. The new EP is a collaboration with R. Ring (Mike Montgomery, who recorded the album, and The Breeders' Kelley Deal, who contributes vocals), and features bass clarinet, viola, and cello.

SOPHIE - Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-Insides (Transgressive Records)

The face of PC Music is making her statement. After making a splash with 2015's PRODUCT EP and producing for artists like Charli XCX, Vince Staples, and Let's Eat Grandma, SOPHIE presents her debut full-length project. It will include anthems such as "It's Okay To Cry" and "Faceshopping."
